The Arizona Diamondbacks, calling Chase Field home since their establishment in 1998, are eyeing renovations for the stadium, estimated to cost between $400-500 million. While the team’s current lease extends through 2027, they are seeking public financing to alleviate some of the financial burden.
Expressing a willingness to contribute “hundreds of millions” of dollars towards the renovations, D-backs ownership is also seeking local support. Managing partner Ken Kendrick clarified that they are not threatening to relocate the team but did not dismiss the possibility either.
Kendrick mentioned potential expansion of Major League Baseball to additional cities and emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue with local authorities. He highlighted the importance of community involvement in the renovation process, aiming to enhance seating, family areas, and surrounding infrastructure for the benefit of residents.
While asserting a commitment to Arizona, Kendrick acknowledged the possibility of time constraints in Phoenix and hinted at the potential interest of new cities in acquiring an existing franchise. Despite disavowing threats, Kendrick’s remarks suggest the team may explore relocation if renovation funding proves insufficient.
This situation underscores the ongoing negotiations between the Diamondbacks and local government regarding ballpark renovations, with the outcome potentially shaping the team’s future location.
