In a statement provided by his wife, Misty McMichael, she expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and described her husband as resilient, affectionately referring to him as “Mongo” and citing his indomitable spirit. Despite facing health challenges, McMichael’s family remains optimistic and continues to seek strength through prayers.

Living with ALS since his diagnosis in 2021, McMichael’s health concerns have been compounded by his recent hospitalization, attributed in part to pneumonia fears and a bacterial infection known as MRSA. Despite his inability to speak and the need for constant care, McMichael’s fighting spirit endures, buoyed by the unwavering support of his loved ones and fans alike.

Earlier this month, McMichael received the news of his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2024 class, a testament to his illustrious career and enduring impact on the game. A pivotal member of the iconic ’85 Bears team that clinched Super Bowl XX, McMichael’s legacy is etched in NFL history, marked by five All-Pro selections and two Pro Bowl appearances over his 13-season tenure with the Bears.

Throughout his remarkable career, McMichael epitomized toughness and tenacity, setting a Bears franchise record with 191 consecutive games played and ranking second in team history with 92.5 sacks. Despite brief stints with the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers, McMichael’s heart remained in Chicago, where his contributions solidified his status as one of the greatest players to don the iconic navy and orange.
