In the face of recent criticism directed at star quarterback Brock Purdy from NFL analysts, All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk stepped up to defend his teammate, providing a matter-of-fact response to reporters.
Aiyuk, who has personally benefited from Purdy’s contributions, expressed his indifference to the negative commentary, stating, “I’m not really talking or focused on his critics. Like, we’re all sitting here because of him, obviously.”
Having experienced the impact of Purdy firsthand, Aiyuk credited the quarterback for his role in Aiyuk’s back-to-back seasons of 1,000-plus receiving yards in 2022 and ’23.
Describing Purdy as “steady, dog, just a football player,” Aiyuk shared his admiration for the quarterback’s qualities and acknowledged Purdy as the reason he feels poised to perform at his best.
This defense of Purdy follows a similar stance taken by fellow receiver Deebo Samuel earlier in the week, who called out NFL analyst Ryan Clark on Instagram for his critique of Purdy on ESPN’s “First Take.”
Despite the external criticism, Purdy enjoys the trust and support of his receivers, as well as the endorsement of Hall of Famers Steve Young and Kurt Warner. As the 49ers aim for their eighth Super Bowl appearance, Purdy’s performance remains crucial, with a home win against the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. PT at Levi’s Stadium.
