Richard Sherman takes on Colin Cowherd’s harsh critique of Brock Purdy, expressing frustration with the unwarranted criticism.
After watching a clip of Cowherd criticizing Purdy’s performance in the 49ers’ playoff win over the Packers, Sherman passionately defended the young quarterback, pointing out the lack of factual basis in Cowherd’s remarks.
Sherman highlighted the comparison with Packers’ quarterback Jordan Love, emphasizing Love’s struggles down the stretch and questioning Cowherd’s assertion that Love is a more talented quarterback. Sherman challenged Cowherd to provide statistical evidence to support his claims, asserting that Purdy would face even harsher criticism if he had thrown interceptions like Love.
Acknowledging that Purdy had a challenging game, Sherman deemed the criticism unfair, particularly considering Purdy’s age and limited experience in the league. He argued against evaluating Purdy as if he were a seasoned veteran, emphasizing the need to credit the young quarterback’s growth and potential.
Keyshawn Johnson, however, acknowledged the challenge for outsiders to fully embrace Purdy, citing his low draft status and the skepticism surrounding his capabilities as a starting quarterback. Despite Purdy’s accomplishments and contributions, critics continue to question his standing, labeling him a “game-manager” or a product of the system.
Sherman expressed frustration with evaluating Purdy based on factors other than his on-field performance, asserting that Purdy’s play should be the primary focus. He emphasized the confidence of 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan in Purdy and suggested that, excluding Patrick Mahomes, Shanahan would likely prefer Purdy over other available quarterbacks.
As Purdy faces ongoing doubt and criticism, Sherman looks ahead to the NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions, hoping a strong performance will silence the skeptics and validate Purdy’s abilities.
