The San Francisco 49ers are gearing up for the 2024 NFL Draft, set to make their selections late in the evening on Thursday, April 24. With a substantial number of draft picks at their disposal, the 49ers are well-positioned to infuse new talent into their roster during the three-day event.
Projections from OverTheCap.com indicate that the 49ers are expected to have a total of 11 draft picks, including four compensatory selections. The site recently unveiled its final compensatory projections for the upcoming draft.
The 49ers’ first-round selection will fall between No. 29 and 32 overall, contingent on their performance in the ongoing season. The crucial NFC Championship clash against the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium will play a determining role in their draft order.
Anticipated to receive the maximum of four compensatory selections, the 49ers’ net losses during the last year’s free-agent signing period have paved the way for additional picks. Compensatory draft selections are distributed between Rounds 3 and 7, factoring in a player’s average salary per year, snap count, and postseason awards.
The departure of tackle Mike McGlinchey to the Denver Broncos has been offset by the 49ers’ acquisition of defensive tackle Javon Hargrave from Philadelphia. However, the losses of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (Las Vegas) and defensive end Samson Ebukam (Indianapolis) position the 49ers to secure third- and fifth-round compensatory picks.
Garoppolo’s move to the Raiders, marked by a substantial contract, ultimately led to a 3-3 record in his six starts, resulting in his benching. Potential sixth-round selections are neutralized by the 49ers’ loss of defensive player Charles Omenihu to Kansas City and the signing of backup quarterback Sam Darnold by Carolina.
On the flip side, the 49ers are likely to gain two sixth-round compensatory picks following the departures of free agents Jimmie Ward (Houston) and Azeez Al-Shaair (Tennessee).
The 49ers possess their own picks in each of the first four rounds, and an additional fourth-rounder was secured in the trade that sent quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys in August. General manager John Lynch further enhanced the draft capital by trading a special compensatory pick at the NFL trading deadline to acquire defensive end Chase Young from Washington.
This special compensatory selection was awarded to the 49ers for the losses of defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and director of player personnel Ran Carthon last offseason. With Ryans assuming the role of head coach for Houston and Carthon becoming the general manager for Tennessee, the 49ers are entitled to one more third-round pick for these departures in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Notably, the 49ers do not possess their own picks in the fifth and sixth rounds, having traded the fifth-round pick to the Carolina Panthers to complete the trade for running back Christian McCaffrey. Additionally, the sixth-round pick was sent to the Broncos in exchange for defensive end Randy Gregory and a seventh-round pick.
