Cornerback Ambry Thomas faced one of his most demanding games in the 49ers’ 24-21 divisional playoff victory over the Green Bay Packers on Saturday. Despite challenges, Thomas views the experience as valuable and is grateful for the live reps as he prepares for the NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions.
Thomas, a Michigan product, allowed catches on all five of his targets for 74 yards, missed two tackles, and committed two crucial penalties, both on third down. However, coming off a hand injury that required surgery earlier this month, Thomas acknowledges the importance of the game experience in gearing up for the upcoming clash with the Lions.
“Ain’t nothing like live reps I feel like,” Thomas stated on Wednesday. “You grow with the live reps. That’s why I’m thankful [for] all that happened to me because this week, I know what it is.”
Having been sidelined since injuring his hand in the New Year’s Eve win over the Washington Commanders, Thomas made his return to the field 20 days later in the 49ers’ NFL playoff debut.
“I felt like I had to get back in the groove of things,” Thomas explained. “Me being out that timespan not practicing, those reps are important during this time. This week I’m getting them back and getting back into the rhythm of things.”
Facing the high-flying pass game of the Detroit Lions, led by quarterback Jared Goff, Thomas acknowledges the need to elevate his performance. He contributed to 54 of San Francisco’s 83 total penalty yards against the Packers, and he is determined to avoid a repeat performance.
Reflecting on his recent struggles, Thomas emphasized the importance of confidence. “Just knowing who I am basically,” he said. “Just believing in me, my technique, my coaches. That’s all it was for me.”
Despite a 41-yard defensive pass interference call on a crucial third-and-15 situation for the Packers, Thomas believes he can improve by staying true to his game. Seeking guidance from veteran teammates and receiving encouragement from All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, Thomas aims to build confidence and deliver a stronger performance in the upcoming NFC Championship Game against the Lions.
